The global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said on Monday it has received approval for generic versions of the hepatitis C drug valacyclovir to treat the virus.
The drug is the first in a new class of antiviral medications called monotherapies.
Pfizer has received approval from the European Medicines Agency for the drug from Novartis (France).
The drug's active ingredient, acyclovir, is the same as the drug brand name, Valtrex, and is a prodrug of the drug valacyclovir.
It was originally approved in March for treatment of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C in April, but it has since been rejected twice by the European Medicines Agency, the agency said.
The agency also has received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration for the drug for the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV-1).
Pfizer has also received approval from the European Medicines Agency for the drug for the treatment of the herpes simplex virus (HSV-2).
Valtrex is the only drug approved for treatment of HSE and the first to have its approved indication.
On Thursday, the US-based company said it was reviewing the drug’s status for approval by the European Medicines Agency.
“We are very pleased with the decision to be informed of the potential of this drug for the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) and its potential role in the treatment of HIV/AIDS,” said the company’s senior vice president for health and public health, Paul Wolfson.
Pfizer also said it was reviewing the potential approval of Valtrex by the European Medicines Agency.
Acyclovir, which is the active ingredient in the drug, works by interfering with viral DNA.
Acyclovir is also a prodrug of the drug valacyclovir.
“We are pleased with the decision to be informed of the potential of this drug for the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) and its potential role in the treatment of HIV/AIDS,” said the company’s senior vice president for health and public health, Paul Wolfson.
The agency’s drug is currently under review by the FDA. It has been rejected twice by the agency in the past six months and the agency said it had to approve two new drugs to treat the virus, Valtrex and Valacyclovir.
“We are confident that this decision is the right one for our clients,” said Wolfson.
“We will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure that the drugs are effective,” he added.
The drug is currently approved for treatment of HIV, a type of infection in which the immune system mistakenly attacks infected cells. It has been prescribed to AIDS patients who may be at high risk for HIV.
Pfizer’s approval is for treatment of patients with a form of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), in which the immune system is unable to effectively fight the virus. The drug is also available for the treatment of HIV in people who have HIV-1 or who are at high risk for HIV.
In June, Pfizer said it was reviewing the drug’s potential for approval for treatment of HSE and the herpes simplex virus (HSV-2).

Uses:Apes in the treatment of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2). Acyclovir is used in the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections in adults and children (genital herpes).
Administration:Take this medication by mouth with or without food.
Storage:Store below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.

Valtrex is an antiviral medication that is used to treat infections caused by herpes virus. It helps reduce the spread of infection and also helps to reduce symptoms such as fever, sore throat, headache, and swollen lymph glands. The active ingredient in Valtrex is acyclovir.
Acyclovir is a nucleotide, which is a nucleic acid. This nucleotide helps the virus in its replication and makes the body more vulnerable to infection. Valtrex works by binding to viral DNA in the cells. A viral DNA is a strand of DNA that is produced by the body. The DNA is the part of a cell that is responsible for producing the virus.
